The Relationships Between Fear of Positive Evaluation and Social Anxiety : The Mediating Effects of Interpretation Biases of Positive Social Events

|
The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationships between fear of positive evaluation and social anxiety, specifically whether these variables can be explained by interpretation biases of positive social events as mediating factors. The interpretation biases of positive social events is divided into two factors, one is the negative prediction about the future after positive social events, which is labelled as Negative Interpretation of Positive Events. And the other is the disinclination to accept positive responses from others at face value and the tendency to perceive such responses as more negative evaluations or motives behind them, which is labelled as Discounting of Positive Events. 453 university students were asked to complete Social Interaction Anxiety Scale(SIAS), Korean Version of the Fear of Positive Evaluation Scale(K-FPES), Interpretation of Positive Events Scale(IPES) and Discounting of Positive Events Scale(DPES). Regression analyses were conducted to examine mediating effects of interpretation biases of positive social events. The results indicated that negative interpretation of positive events partially mediated relationship between fear of positive evaluation and social anxiety. And discounting of positive events also partially mediated relationship between these two variables. With these results, we discussed the relationships between fear of positive evaluation and social anxiety in terms of information processing. Finally, the clinical implications and several limitations of the present study were discussed.
